Com.It.Es 2nd Fundraiser Dinner Monday, May 20, 2024 Trattoria Da Luigi in Royal Oak MI

The Com.It.Es. Detroit, a non-profit Italian organization representing Italians living abroad, is having a dinner fundraiser on Monday May 20, 2024. Come and enjoy this special evening at the renowned Trattoria Da Luigi in Royal Oak, MI.

Location à  Trattoria Da Luigi à 415 South Washington Ave, Royal Oak MI.  A sumptuous four course authentic Italian dinner will be served including soft drinks and coffee.  Cash bar available for alcoholic beverages.  $50 per person & advance registration required by May 13.  Register for the dinner by calling the COMITES office at 586-991-0193. Please leave a message and indicate your name, number attending & your phone number. Payment will be accepted at the door by cash or check made out to COMITES.  Restaurant doors open at 6:30pm, dinner at 7:00pm.

Italian Heritage Night – Detroit Pistons

Com.It.Es. Detroit will be hosting a Memorial  Mass at San Francesco Church in Clinton Township at 10am on Sunday, March 10, 2024  for past Consul of Italy in Detroit, Marco Nobili. 
The 10am Mass at San Francesco is in Italian.   
Marco Nobili was Consul of Italy in our jurisdiction  from December 2008 until February 2013.
Marco passed away suddenly last month in Vancouver, Canada where he was Consul General of Italy.
We would like to remember this wonderful man and friend to many in the Italian community here with this Memorial Mass.  We hope you will join us.

The Ambassador of Italy to the U.S. , Mariangela Zappia came to Detroit for a very special visit to LoveItDetroit, the month long event presented by the Consulate of Italy in Detroit and the Dante Alighieri Society of Michigan.

122nd Anniversary of the
“Wreck on the Wabash”

We are pleased to announce that Com.It.Es. will be commemorating the 122nd Anniversary of the “Wreck on the Wabash” with a Memorial visit to Adrian on Sunday, October 1, 2023.
We will be convening at the Oakwood Cemetery in Adrian at 11:30 am for a graveside prayer service, presided by Father Enzo Addari. A buffet lunch at Adrian College will follow.
We are honored and pleased that the Consul of Italy in Detroit , Allegra Baistrocchi will be with us.
Our dear Adrian friends, former Adrian Mayor Jim Berryman,   Adrian Mayor Angela Heath, Dr. Kyle Griffith, Assistant Administrator Lenawee School District and Dr. Laurie Perkins – Michigan historian will also be in attendance.

“October 1st, Wreck on the Wabash”

On October 1, 2023, a beautiful Michigan fall Sunday,
Com.It.Es Detroit hosted a memorial visit to the victims of the “Wreck on the Wabash”.
Consul of Italy in Detroit, Allegra Baistrocchi was in attendance as was Com.It.Es Detroit President Anthony Di Ponio, former Mayor of Adrian Jim Berryman, Professor Kyle Griffith,
historian/author Laurie Perkins,  sculptor Sergio De Giusti, Father Enzo Addari and about 20 others who paid their respects on the 122nd anniversary of this tragic event.
A buffet luncheon at Adrian College followed the graveside blessing.
It was a heartwarming day for all.

Com.It.Es. Detroit organized and presented  an in person event  on Thursday, June, 8 2023 at the Rochester Hills Library .  The captivating story of the tragic end to the Andrea Doria was told to an audience of 90  by Michigan resident and author, film producer and Andrea Doria survivor Pierette Domenica Simpson.

Her docu film “Are the Passengers Saved” was shown.
Ms. Simpson’s DVD of the movie and her book, “Alive on the Andrea Doria” were available for sale and signing.

Com.It.Es. Detroit President Tony Di Ponio thanks Pierette Domenica Simpson , the Rochester Hills Library, all who worked on this event and those who attended.     Grazie!!!

The “Son of Italy” nearly 100

A Zoom In-Person (“ZIP”) Talk
Tuesday, March 28, 2023
@ 6:30pm – 8pm

The Com.It.Es. Detroit, a non-profit Italian organization representing Italians living abroad, under the Auspices of the Consulate of Italy in Detroit, is pleased to present Professor Ken Scambray, to discuss the classic Italian autobiography by Pascal D’ Angelo: Son of Italy, published in 1924.  This Zoom special talk will be hosted at the Italian American Cultural Center (IACC) in Clinton Township, MI.  Prof. Scambray will be on a Zoom call live from his San Clemente, CA home.  Attendees in-person at the IACC or on the Zoom call will be able to ask questions.

Prof. Scambray will discuss Pascal D’Angelo’s autobiography, Son of Italy. In his presentation, he will cover the American cultural and literary context surrounding D’Angelo’s autobiography and Italian immigration at the time. He will also place D’Angelo’s work within the context of Italian American literature before World War II, including Pietro Di Donato’s equally remarkable work, Christ in Concrete published in 1939.

Kenneth Scambray received his Ph.D. at the University of California, Riverside. His works include The North American Italian Renaissance: Italian Writing in America and Canada (2000), Surface Roots: Short Stories (2004), Queen Calafia’s Paradise: California and the Italian American Novel (2007), Italian Immigration in the American West: 1870-1940 (2021). For 35+ years he wrote for L’Italo-Americano, contributing hundreds of book & film reviews and travel essays, based on his extensive Italian travels. His many other essays on Italy, Italian immigration, and folk art installations in the West have appeared in national and international journals and anthologies. His poetry & fiction have appeared in national literary journals. He is the winner of The Paterson Literary Review’s Editor’s Choice Prize for the Allen Ginsberg Poetry Prize, 2007. For 17 years Prof. Scambray took his students on a cultural tour of Rome & Florence during the January interterm. He is Professor Emeritus at the University of La Verne.  One set of Prof. Scambray’s grandparents immigrated from Sicily; the other from Calabria.  His surname was “Schrembi” before it was AmericanizedProf. Scambray wrote the afterword of the republished 2003 Guernica edition of Son Of Italy.

La Ricchezza e la Bellezza dei Dialetti Italiani 2a Edizione 2019

Domenica, 27 ottobre 2019 il Com.It.Es. di Detroit,

Sotto gli Auspici del Consolato d’Italia in Detroit ha

presentato la 2a edizione della “Richezza e Bellezza dei

Dialetti Italiani”. L’evento si e’ svolto al Centro Culturale

Italiano e come l’anno scorso ha ottenuto un grande

successo. Il programma e’ stato preceduto da una

prelibata cena preparata dalla Chef del Centro Culturale,

Alex Lozovoj.

Quest’anno sono state rappresentate sette regioni d’Italia – Il

Trentino Alto-Adige con la lettura svolta da Tina Silverio,

Consigliere del Com.It.Es. di Detroit.

La Liguria ha avuto come testimonial Massimiliano (Max)


Il Piemonte e’ stato rappresentato da Laura Rubatto,

La Lombardia ha avuto come testimonial Judy Moroni Pace.

Per l’Emilia Romagna ha letto Jason Gasperoni,

per la Toscana c’era Serena Panigada e il Molise e’ stato

rappresentato da Antonio “Tony” DiGiorgio.

Questo evento culturale e’ stato diretto dia

Anna Castaldi, Consigliere del Com.It.Es. di Detroit e

direttrice della Commissione Lingua e Cultura.

La parte didattica del programma e’ stato organizzato, come

l’anno scorso brillantemente dalla Dott.ssa Alessandra

Cuzzocrea, preziosissima collaboratrice del Com.It.Es. di

Detroit che ha iniziato il programma con una presentazione

sull’evoluzione della lingua italiana. Con ogni lettura, c’e’

stato un l’accompagnamento musicale con una canzone

regionale cantata con un bellissimo sottofondo alla chitarra

da Pino Marelli.

La serata e’ stata impreziosita dalla presenza della nostra

Console, la Dott.ssa Maria Manca che ha congratulato il

Com.It.Es. di Detroit per questa bellissima iniziativa,

sottolineando l’importanza dei nostri meravigliosi dialetti

che sono un patrimonio della cultura italiana.

Il Presidente Domenico Ruggirello ricorda che l’anno scorso,

precisamente il 21 ottobre, 2018 il Com.It.Es. di Detroit ha

presentato la prima edizione di questo evento innovativo con

la rappresentanza di ben 11 regioni. E’ in programma di

ripetere il programma nel 2020, con la partecipazione di tutte

le regioni che hanno fatto parte della prima e seconda

Chi siamo

Com.It.Es (Comitato degli Italiani all’ Estero) e’ un’ ente non-profit. Il Comitato e’ organo di rappresentanza degli italiani all’estero nei rapporti con le rappresentanze
diplomatico -consolari. La rappresentanza Diplomatica-Consolare Italiana informa le autorita’ locali dell’istituzione del Comitato e del tipo di attivita’ svolta.

(Compiti e funzioni del Com.It.Es)
Il Comitato, anche attraverso studi e ricerche, contribuisce ad individuare le esigenze di sviluppo sociale, culturale e civile della propria comunita’. A tal fine ciascun Comitato promuove, in collaborazione con le autorita’ Consolare, opportune iniziative nelle materie attinenti alla vita sociale e culturale con particolare riguardo alla partecipazione dei giovani, all’assistenza sociale e scolastica, alla formazione professionale, al settore ricreativo, allo sport e al tempo libero della comunita’.

Il Com.It.Es – Detroit, rappresenta cinque stati nella Circoscrizione Consolare di Detroit: MI, OH, IN, KY, TN.
(Eleggibilita’ e composizione del Com.It.Es)
1. Il Comitato e’ composto da dodici membri.
2. Sono eleggibili I cittadini italiani residenti nella circoscrizione Consolare (MI, OH, IN, KY,TN)
3.Oltre ai Membri eletti di cittadinanza Italiana, possono far parte del Comitato, per cooptazione, i cittadini stranieri di origine italiana in misura non eccedente un terzo dei componenti del Comitato eletto. (Il Com.It.Es di Detroit puo’ cooptare non piu’ di 4 Membri.
4. Le sedute del Com.It.Es sono pubbliche.
5. Il Capo dell’Ufficio Consolare o un suo rappresentante appositamente delegato, partecipa alle sedute del Com.It.Es.
6. I componenti del Comitato restano in carica per cinque anni e sono rieleggibili solo per un periodo massimo di due mandati consecutivi.

Who We Are

Com.It.Es (Comitato degli Italiani all’ Estero – (Committee for Italians living Abroad)) is a non-profit institution. The Com.It.Es is an organ of representation of Italians living abroad. It serves as a liaison in the relations with the Italian Diplomatic-Consular authorities.
The Italian Diplomatic-Consular authorities instruct the local authorities of Com.It.Es and of the type of activities to be carried out.

(Tasks and functions of Com.It.Es.)
The Com.It.Es, also through studies and research, contributes and locates the needs for social, cultural and civil development of the community. To this end, each Com.It.Es promotes, in cooperation with the Consular authorities, appropriate initiatives to relative projects pertaining to social and cultural life, with particular attention to the participation of the young generation, to social and educational assistance, professional training, recreation, sport and free time of the community.
COM.IT.ES – Detroit represents five states that are under the jurisdiction of the Italian Consulate in Detroit: MI, OH, IN, KY,TN

(Eligibility and composition of the Com.It.Es.)
1. The Com.It.Es is made up of twelve Members.
2. Italian citizens who are residents of the Consular jurisdiction of MI, OH, IN, KY, TN are eligible.
3. In addition to the elected Members who are Italian citizens, foreign citizens of Italian origin may be a part of Com.It.Es through cooptation, as long as the number does not exceed one third of the elected Com.It.Es. Members. (The Com.It.Es of Detroit may co-opt no more than four Members.
4. The Com.It.Es meetings are open to the public.
5. The head of the Consular office or one of his/her representatives, specially delegated will be present at the Com.It.Es meetings.
6. The Com.It.Es Members remain in office for a term of five years and are elgibile for re-election only for a period of a maximum of two consecutive terms.
